A good example of what you may NOT want to do is install pink granite counter-tops. As much as you may love the color pink, others may not like pink counter-tops. They are very uncommon, and many buyers would refuse to buy a house with pink counter-tops.
Home renovations can be difficult to do alone, so if you are going to find a contractor, be sure you find one that is licensed and bonded.
It is important you do the proper research before making such a large investment. Although you will likely be able to recoup the costs you spent on the renovations when you sell your house, it’s still important to make wise and careful decisions.
